I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! A++
I wish I had this book as a young professional. I could have avoided so many mistakes. As I read it, it struck me that what she talks about is so true, but nobody has ever written about something so clearly and honestly that I know of. You can tell that she has been through real life and traveled through her own career journey, and understands what she is talking about. Her insight into how the workplace works is so spot on! She tells great stories that really bring the points home as well with a very unique and fun reading style.I especially loved the 5 Stages of Career Growth. She spends several chapters talking about the skillsets that you need at each stage of your career and how they need to evolve for one to be successful at the next stage. I’ve never seen anyone else capture it like this and I found it so useful, even as a senior executive who has learned many of the professional lessons the harder way.I also liked her chapters on Promotability and Power—I want every single one of my department members to take in what she outlines as a plan for how to grow your influence in an organization. It is actionable with great checklists and case studies and even scripts to draw upon to guide you through.Great read for anyone working through a career–but especially relevant for Directors and below.

Straightforward, helpful career advice from an experienced HR pro
This book is full of practical, real-world advice for anyone looking to grow in their career. The author has many years of experience in human resources, including at the executive level, and it shows. The tips cover things you might not even realize you need to know. It’s definitely one of those “you don’t know what you don’t know” books. It’s easy to read, not overly complicated, and I’ve already applied several ideas from it. I bought it early on and have gone back to it more than once. I also follow the author on TikTok and appreciate how relevant and approachable the content is. Highly recommend.

Read it and bought it for my college kids too!
I loved the tricks for talking about conflict at work. It helped me address some problems with my manager and it went better than I expected.I was trying to decide if I was going to stay or go. I wanted to change jobs and I read the chapter on “Should I Stay or Should I Go” and chose to work through my problems and reinvent myself. She helped me see all of the options in a new light.This is a perfect book for my college kids to enter the workforce.This book is easy to read because it is not a one time read through book, it is a pick your chapter that applies to you and run with it!

Great resource for understanding the behind the scenes of HR!
This book provided valuable coaching and “job search” insights applicable to all professionals in any stage of their careers. I appreciated the examples the author provided for communicating with your boss, preparing for an interview, and for dealing with conflict/resolution matters; these were most helpful. I look forward to using more of her resources referenced in the book for my professional development.

Great read – so good I ordered 5 more to give to direct reports
Great book, thank you Tessa for writing this. I bought 5 more copies and likely will buy more to give as gifts. I appreciate the “cliff notes style” of this book, great content and to the point. Countless others are the same message over and over just different analogies or stories of the concept to fill up enough pages to call it a book – they could be distilled down to a single quote and waste your time. If you’ve ever felt like that this is a good book for you.

What are you waiting for?!
If you’re seeking guidance on how to continuously grow and thrive in your career, this is the book for you! From start to finish, I found myself nodding in agreement with the invaluable insights shared by the author.When I started a new job, I quickly realized that I was playing checkers while everyone around me was playing chess. I was unaware of the rules for success and growth in my role, mistakenly believing that working overtime and keeping my head down would suffice. However, observing my manager’s dissatisfaction despite following the same approach was eye-opening. Thankfully, I discovered Tessa White’s book, which transformed my perspective.I learned that hard work is indeed essential but must be paired with strategic thinking to progress in your career. This book taught me how to gain leverage when negotiating a raise and use office politics effectively.Investing in this book is undoubtedly worthwhile, as its wisdom will prove useful throughout your career. It has become my go-to gift for all new graduates!

Worth > 1000x The Purchase Price
I’m not an avid reader so I appreciate the conversational approach the author takes—for me it really helped to keep me engaged and made the read far more enjoyable than your typical professional development book. Parts of it will piss you off as you discover how unjust corporate America is, but it’s sadly (most times) accurate I think. This “behind the scenes” insight provides invaluable access to better help you navigate your career and coach you through sensitive and uncomfortable pay and career discussions with your management; helping you get more of what you want and deserve from your employer. Five stars. Don’t just read it. Study it, reference it, apply it, and count your way to your 1000x payback and beyond.

Boy, do I wish I’d had this book 20 years ago!
No matter what stage you are in your career, this book will enlighten, empower, and equip you to navigate the sometimes rough terrain that is the modern workplace.White calls it like she sees it, imploring readers to take ownership of their professional development but hands over the tools to make it happen. She includes personal stories and anecdotes, case studies, worksheets, and mini-assignments with real life examples of how to negotiate pay, understand corporate politics, diffuse conflicts, and more.Written with authenticity and a refreshingly honest voice, this book is one of the best investments you could make in yourself and your career.

Don’t learn the hard way. Office politics, challenging managers, frustrating employees, unmet expectations and hazy performance reviews plague all of us. Let this book be your guide.Great for those brand new to the workplace, those a few years in, and even (maybe especially) senior leaders.
