All academics need to write, but many struggle to finish their dissertations, articles, books, or grant proposals. Writing is hard work and can be difficult to wedge into a frenetic academic schedule. How can we write it all while still having a life?

In this second edition of his popular guidebook, Paul Silvia offers fresh advice to help you overcome barriers to writing and use your time more productively. After addressing some common excuses and bad habits, he provides practical strategies to motivate students, professors, researchers, and other academics to become better and more prolific writers. Silvia draws from his own experience in psychology to explain how to write, submit, and revise academic work, from journal articles to books, all without sacrificing evenings, weekends, and vacations. The tips and strategies in this second edition have been updated to apply to academic writing in most disciplines. Also new to this edition is a chapter on writing grant and fellowship proposals.

    Practical and Easy to Implement
This book is an excellent selection for anyone searching for those practical strategies to increase the amount of writing he or she produces. Whether for homework, dissertations, grant proposals or novel writing, there is a chapter in this book sure to provide exactly what you need. Another plus is the author’s use of humor throughout… Was such a great read that I completed it in one sitting!

    Funny and Helpful
I’m writing my PhD dissertation and one of my committee members recommended this book. I’m glad he did. It is practical, funny, helpful, and encouraging. A quick and easy read, it doesn’t belabor the point but provides suggestions and structures to support academic writers.

    Silvia is a portable mentor
The book is a hook! It’s storytelling style makes it compelling, and the practical experiences compel one to start their writing instantly. It is the best tool for graduate students, though too, helpful to practitioners. It can make the best teaching aid for professors on writing.

Just Write, Stop Making Excuses, and Get Your Life Back
Paul J. Silvia, a psychology professor and a researcher on creativity, provides a short, lovely, and encouraging book on the conscious habit of writing. Silvia is quick to assure us his method is based in psychological research: ““We won’t talk about unleashing your inner anything: put your ‘inner writer’ back on its leash and give it a chew toy. Instead, we’ll talk about your outer writer. Writing productively is about actions that you aren’t doing but could easily do: making a writing schedule, setting clear goals, keeping track of your work, rewarding yourself, and building good habits. Productive writers don’t have special gifts or special traits—they just write more regularly and use their writing time more efficiently.” Carving out time to write regularly during your work week is the heart of Silvia’s suggestions. He rejects the ”specious barriers” and “frequently grumbled grumbles” that we use to excuse ourselves from the act of writing itself (““Writer’s block isn’t a real thing: it’s a shorthand label for ‘sometimes writing is incredibly hard’ that some people elevate to an inscrutable, fickle force”). Silvia also provides advice for how to run a supportive and non-judgmental writing group, as well as how to write journal articles, books, and grant proposals. The ultimate goal of Silvia’s method is to free you to have a life outside your academic job. “Spend your leisure time hanging out, finding new trails, building canoes, agitating against The System, perfecting your apple fritter recipe, or holding a staring contest with your inscrutable cat. It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you don’t spend your free time writing—there’s time during the work week for that.” Reading Silvia’s advice is like listening to your super helpful cheerleader friend who will nevertheless not tolerate your excuses. I haven’t written anything in about four years. I plan to use Silvia’s recommendations to jump right back in.

    Great book!
How to Write a Lot is great for how to write a lot, but also helps wade folks, who have been away from writing properly, back into a more formal writing style. It covers academic writing, but not in a way that overwhelms. It’s a good read with great advice.

    Must read
You might not need this book, but I did. I am a second year Ph.D. student. I have watched other students conduct many studies that they never write up. I made a commitment to myself to get the most out of my time in the program, and this book gave me a concrete plan to ensure my productivity as a writer and scientist. I am so glad I read this book at the beginning of graduate school and not toward the end! The main point of the book is simple, but powerful. Do yourself a favor and spend an afternoon reading this gem.

    Witty, practical, original
It’s not just another writing book. My university’s faculty center highly recommended this book and it exceeded my expectations. Witty, practical, and original, Silvia champions small but steady progress toward any writing project. (“You don’t need a sabbatical to write a book.”) In my first year as an assistant professor I have published over 20 journal articles thanks to this advice. I now share the book with colleagues and students. A quick read.

The text guides academic writers to learn how to maintain writing schedules, improve their writing styles and even delves into the technical considerations that come with research grants and publishing in journals.
