Find quiet reflective moments in your life—and reduce your stress levels drastically—with this classic bestselling guide updated and featuring a new introduction and afterword.
When Wherever You Go, There You Are was first published in 1994, no one could have predicted that the book would launch itself onto bestseller lists nationwide and sell over 1 million copies to date. Thirty years later, Wherever You Go, There You Are remains a foundational guide to mindfulness and meditation, introducing readers to the practice and guiding them through the process. The author of over half a dozen books on mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn combines his research and medical background with his spiritual knowledge to help readers find peace and change their lives.
In this new edition, readers will find a new introduction and afterword from Kabat-Zinn, as well as factual updates throughout to address changes in research and knowledge since it was originally published. After the special tumult of the last few years, as well as the promise of more unrest in the future, Wherever You Go, There You Are serves as an anchor for a whole new generation of readers looking to find their center and achieve their true self.

Valuable resource
Great book for beginners or those experienced with mindfulness, more straightforward and focused on the science than mysticism.

Great book, but a few issues
I really enjoyed this book and it motivated me to get back to my meditation routine. The practical advice is clear. As a longtime reader of Buddhism, I also appreciated the sprinkling of Buddhist philosophy and principles. I’ll also say that as compared to some of the Buddhist “word salad” texts I’ve waded through, this is fairly clear and straightforward. (Buddhist teachings are not supposed to be easy, but they’re also not supposed to be impenetrable. This book hits the mark.)The author does have some writing “tics” that are annoying. If you’re a rhetoric purist, they may bother you as they did me.. The short-chapter format felt a little random and…not really lazy, but too easy and not in service to the reader. The transitions from chapter to chapter are rough or non-existent. The author has a habit of writing “pun intended” or “no pun intended” when there is no pun. (Maybe he doesn’t know what a pun is? An editor could have helped with things like this.) There are many sentences that are run-ons — one had 87 words and two digressions, and I had to reread it several times to get the gist. (Again…editor!) The introductory section (forward) is over-long, and the afterword is WAY too long and has a bunch of material that frankly could have just been included in the main text. I can overlook these minor flaws because the content is solid, but in some respects the book feels like it was cranked out without respect to flow. Finally, a note on the Kindle version: Paragraphs are randomly formatted. In some chapters, paragraphs are are flush left with a space between them, in other chapters they are spaced between and first tabbed except the first paragraph (?), in others the paragraphs are first-sentence-indented but no space between paragraphs. This is careless and distracting. Come on, Kindle, your version costs the same as the print one — it should be consistently formatted.

Great gift for an introduction to mindfulness
This is a classic. Great introduction to mindfulness and meditaton. I did a retreat once with the author and he was fabulous. It’s easily accessible with a set of teachings, followed by exercises that you can easily spread out to do daily or weekly. Great way to start, but you probably want to join an in-person class at some point to learn more and get the fellowship/motivation offered by a group. I found getting involved in the Shambhala meditation community was very good for both classes, friendliness, weekend trainings and occassional social events. When a friend or family member is struggling with something, I often give this book as a gift. Reciepients always say they find it helpful. Another good starter book on mindfulness is Pema Chodron’s ‘When Things Fall Apart.

so delighted to stumble upon this again!
I read “Wherever You Go, There You Are” many years ago and it had a great positive influence on me and others around me. The book went to a friend a long time ago and I just stumbled upon this fantastic sale in kindle format. I can’t hold a book anymore so this was a fortuitous stumble. One thing I’ll always remember: K-Z emphasized that we are part of the world and wrote something like, “When we change ourselves, we change the world.”That sentence made me a calmer, happier and less judgemental person. I had tried to make the world a better place, My Way, and wanted others to change themselves. Now I demonstrate by words and deeds how I want the world to be and offer support for those who might want to do or think as I do. My personal space is now a wonderful place.

Best book of mindfulness , so far I came across. Clears out all the questions one might have about the practice, being and related confusions.

This man’s work seems to me to be one of those growth points in human culture that don’t crop up too often. He’s making enormously beneficial mind-training techniques available to ordinary western(ised) people, without the cultural and religious associations of their origins, which can be very challenging for most of us. I mean, you don’t have to be a Zen master to benefit from this! What I like about his approach is that it is so simple and down-to-earth. It’s not “alternative,” it’s here-and-now, everyday, (yet demanding.)Seems to me if more westerners used his insights and techniques, not only would they feel better about themselves and their lives (I do, already)but the planet might be a safer place to live. Maybe that’s pitching it a bit high – but give it a shot and see if you agree. The book is beautifully lucid. I think most of us need some other additional regular guidance and structure to make mindfulness part of our everyday – well, I do, anyway – but more courses are springing up, and no doubt the CDs help. But it’s not a magic bullet – it takes time and application, and in a funny way, it’s quite hard work. And I think it’s worth getting into it even if you are not depressed or in pain, ahead of the times when you have to face suffering, yours or someone else’s – because it adds so much to ordinary life.It has taught me to question and adapt or change some of my characteristic responses – or at least to start doing so – and that’s not always comfortable. But it really is worth it.If you’re a sceptical rationalist like me, be reassured – this man isn’t a freaky guru, he’s a trained scientist, a genuine teacher. This isn’t a cult. It won’t claim to change your life in a flash. But if you give it a chance – it really will help, with a lot of – “stuff.” And it can actually be very enjoyable.
