The #1 Easy, Commonsense Guide to Database Design―Now Updated
Foreword by Michelle Poolet, Mount Vernon Data Systems LLC
Database Design for Mere Mortals has earned worldwide respect as the simplest way to learn relational database design. Now, this hands-on, software independent tutorial is even clearer and easier to use.
Step by step, this new 25th Anniversary Edition shows you how to design modern databases that are soundly structured, reliable, and flexible, even in the latest online applications. Michael Hernandez guides you through everything from planning to defining tables, fields, keys, table relationships, business rules, and views. You will learn practical ways to improve data integrity, how to avoid common mistakes, and when to break the rules. Updated review questions and figures help you learn these techniques more easily and effectively.
Understand database types, models, and design terminologyPerform interviews to efficiently capture requirements―even if everyone works remotelySet clear design objectives and transform them into effective designsAnalyze a current database so you can identify ways to improve itEstablish table structures and relationships, assign primary keys, set field specifications, and set up viewsEnsure the correct level of data integrity for each databaseIdentify and establish business rulesPreview and prepare for the future of relational databases
Whatever relational database systems you use, Hernandez will help you design databases that are robust and trustworthy. Never designed a database before? Settling for inadequate generic designs? Running existing databases that need improvement? Start here.

How This Book is Different
Many database design books on the market include chapters on implementing the database within a specific database product, and some books even seem to meld the design and implementation phases together and a reader can have difficulty obtaining any useful or relevant information from the implementation chapters if he or she doesn’t work with the particular database software or programming language that the book incorporates.
This book deals with only the logical design phase of the overall development process, and the book’s main purpose is to explain the process of relational database design without using the advanced, orthodox methodologies.

This book is easy to read.
Many of the database design books on the market are highly technical and can be difficult to assimilate. I think most of these books can be confusing and overwhelming if you are not a computer science major, database theorist, or experienced database developer.

The design principles you’ll learn within these pages are easy to understand and remember, and the examples are common and generic enough to be relevant to a wide variety of situations.

When you finish reading this book, you’ll have the knowledge and tools necessary to create a good relational database structure. I’m confident that this entire approach will work for a majority of developers and the databases they need to create.

Yoimar Moreno Bertel –
The book is really good. Content a quality 10/10.
If you are starting into database modeling, this one should be enough. Nevertheless, I recommend doing a lot of database modeling once you have the basics.

Great Book for Anyone New to Designing Databases for Business
I read the book when it first came out and I was beginning my IT career years ago… loved it then and find much of it holds true to this day. Easy read with clear thinking that is easy to follow and apply.

Not Compatible with Kindle Scribe
I’m sure this is a great book if I could actually read it. This is not compatible for Kindles as my Kindle Scribe will not open. I am pretty disappointed that I have to read it through the Kindle App on my PC instead.

Amazon kindle E-book
Ordered this item for school, a little bit hard to access but I’m able to access the material fine.

Dr. P. Druggan –
I first bought this book 20 years or more ago. It is a great book if you have not built a database before. It is strange reading the new edition to find where many of my ideas on data and information came from, though I wasn’t aware of it at the time.Only criticism is that is it a little too wordy for me, though I say that after reading five chapters. He could be more econmical in his writing, but he does manage to make a complex idea graspable. As much as I’ve watched a few videos lately on databases, they do not have the impact that this book has. Yeah, reading it takes longer, but you feel like your mind has changed, not been entertained, when you read Hernandez.

Langweiliger Schreibstil und hat mir auch nicth geholfen.

I have been reading this book page by page with highlighter in hand. Lots of emphasis on the interview process but the points are well taken. Nice approach to design avoiding some technical training about normal forms and focusing on the ideal elements of a database. This is now one of my top of shelf references.

Dont buy this book. Only long theory and his story, no practical examples
