Teachers don’t have to cut out penguin beaks anymore. You can put your weather bear back in the cupboard (or bring it outside) and you can take the behavior chart off the wall. This book is your permission slip to break up with outdated and ineffective practices in your early childhood classroom and replace them with the magic of play-based learning! This helpful guide challenges outdated preschool practices in a kind and compelling way, inviting you to reflect on your own practices and adjust them based on current research and what is truly developmentally appropriate for young children. It provides tools and language to use to show the people outside your classroom (parents, administrators, other teachers down the hall) that play is learning. Each chapter is practical, conscience and meant to be read in the order and at the pace that is best for you and your class. Full of stories from the author’s own play journey, I’m Not Getting Them Ready for Kindergarten is key reading for early childhood educators who are ready to step outside the restrictions of an unnecessarily academic system and settle into the magic of play and child-led learning.

    Must read!
“I’m Not Getting Them Ready for Kindergarten” is a must-read for early childhood educators and anyone passionate about nurturing young learners. This book offers a wealth of information, but what truly sets it apart is its approachable, conversational writing style. The author presents practical strategies and insights in a way that feels both personal and professional, making complex ideas easy to grasp and apply. As a curriculum coordinator, I found this book incredibly validating and inspiring. It reinforces the importance of focusing on developmentally appropriate practices rather than simply preparing children to meet arbitrary benchmarks. It challenges the traditional mindset around early education and advocates for fostering creativity, curiosity, and a love of learning.I’ve recommended this book to countless colleagues, and many have thanked me for the suggestion. It’s a game-changer in how we view early childhood education, reminding us of the critical role we play in shaping children’s first experiences with school. Whether you’re a seasoned educator or new to the field, this book is an excellent resource to keep on your shelf.

Getting Young Children Ready for Life, NOT Kindergarten
Kristen is amazing! A champion for children and play! I too subscribe to a play based philosophy in my Early Childhood Classroom. This book is full of information, ideas and resources. The stories Kristen tells from her time in the classroom are relatable and full of humor. She shares situations that Early Childhood Educators will recognize. Her style is conversational, making the idea of play based classrooms approachable. Looking forward to using some of the “But Kristen-s” to jumpstart conversations with colleagues who might be on the fence about implementing a play based philosophy.

    Wonderful ECE resource!
As a long time follower and fellow play advocate, I was so excited for the release of this book! I initially purchased for myself, but quickly realized what a wonderful resource this is for my early learning center staff. Whether encouraging a seasoned early childhood educator to try new things, or reminding a play loving teacher the importance of not falling back into old habits, this book does the job! It’s easy to read, relatable and thought provoking. Thank you Kristen for formatting these ideas in a way that any teacher of young children can relate!
