2013 Reprint of 1908 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This title illustrates the most important mechanical movements in dynamics, hydraulics, hydrostatics, pneumatics, steam engines, mill and other gearing, presses, horology, and miscellaneous machinery ; and including many movements never previously published, and several which had only recently come into use as of 1868, the first date of publication for this classic title. This 1868 compendium of ingenious mechanisms employs simple drawings to explain 507 of the small components that constitute complex machinery. Left-hand pages feature illustrations, and facing pages offer brief descriptions of their use and operation. Ranging from simple to complex, the mechanisms include cranks, pulleys, drills, wheels, and screws.

What a fun book to have by my toilet
Each page has the diagram and description of a mechanism and what it does or could be used for. Short entries, PERFECT for bathroom visits.

A quick learn
This book has helped to reference simple machine motions for years, now. It is a wonderful ally to have at your side when you need a quick look at anything for engineering and even just simply learning about mechanical contraptions and their uses!

Amazing book for 3-D printing people
This was a great book to read when designing some of my 3-D prints to be more mechanical because I find it satisfying to watch.

Encyclopedic Collection of Mechanical Movements
Very interesting. The book is well made, tight binding, durable cover, acid free paper. Some people have complained about the quality of the text. It looks like a copy of a copy. I see this a lot in Dover books. It is a photo reproduction of an out-of-copyright text that was probably originally printed with a letterpress, instead of a modern offset press. The font is very small, and a little wobbly, but it is legible.Pages alternate with illustrations and descriptions of those illustrations on facing pages. Between seven and nine devices in each section.Great resource for ideas. I can understand why it’s still in print.

Get this for your mechanically-minded loved one
If you’re into mechanical gizmos, then I highly recommend this book. In reading this I found myself in amazement at the cleverness of the inventors of the industrial revolution and it has taught me a lot about mechanics. Its a great brainteaser, too. Each machine has a drawing and a brief explanation of how it works. Some (a minority) of the machines’ descriptions seem to omit important steps in how the machine works but I actually liked this because it’s more of a challenge, and when you finally get how a machine works, it’s very rewarding.

Could use more detail
Interesting book but it’s a little lite on the details

Great reference book.
As a huge fan of reference books I was very happy to add this to my library. All kinds of neat things in this book. If you are into physics, especially anything regarding mechanical movement then you’ll like this book. Very reasonably priced as well.

Fascinating & full of wonder… a real eye opener.
I came across this mechanical encyclopedia of sorts while doing research for a project. While my simple brain cannot comprehend most of the intricate movements & their intended applications described in this small but mighty book, I do find that I am wholly inspired each time that I open it.If you are an engineer, designer, tinkerer, dreamer, artist or someone interested in learning how stuff works, please buy this book. The illustrations are beautiful & the accompanying summaries are terrific. Even though most everything offered is light years beyond my level of understanding, I turn to it often to think & be humbled.

Einfach ein tolles Inspirierendes Buch wenn man Spezielle Bewegungsabläufe auf einfachte Art umsetzen möchte

It advertises 507 mechanical movements but the only mechanical movement this book makes is the turning of pages, 0/10Jokes aside, all of the information on this book is available for free on the web as it is a public domain title, but if you are a fan of physical copies such as I, this softcover will serve you very well. It is affordable, the printing quality is authentic to the originals, and it solidly built.Overall, a good addition to any bookshelf. As for the contents, if you’re one who upon understanding how a simple, ingenious solutions to a problem works opens up a wide, wonderment-full smile, this book is very much for you.

I advise it.

I like the various movement illustrations. The description given for each is very short and that’s the reason 500+ illustrations could be fitted in this book. The book is definitely an “ok” reprint and slightly obfuscated at places because of OCR scan on typewriter font didn’t go well for this one. Eventually, if one has a knack for crafting things that move, this book can offer ideas. With a 3D printer, one can actually assemble most of these movement designs at home. Definitely a recommend for the tinkerers and curious folks.
