Cut through the busyness and anxieties of daily life to discover the simple happiness of living in the present moment, as taught by a world-renowned Zen monk
In this book, Thich Nhat Hanh—Zen monk, author, and meditation master—distills the essence of Buddhist thought and practice, emphasizing the power of mindfulness to transform our lives. But true mindfulness, Hanh explains, is not an escape. It is being in the present moment, totally alive and free.
Based on a retreat that Thich Nhat Hanh led for Westerners, You Are Here offers a range of effective practices for cultivating mindfulness and staying in the present moment—including awareness of breathing and walking, deep listening, and skillful speech. These teachings will empower you to witness the wonder of life and transform your suffering, both within and outside you, into compassion, tenderness, and peace. As Thich Nhat Hanh declares, “the energy of mindfulness is the energy of the Buddha, and it can be produced by anybody.” It is as simple as breathing in and breathing out.

    master philosopher of peaceful presence!
simple, yet profound…Thich Nhat Hanh is a magical philosopher and writer… words are barely able to convey the power and breadth of ideas, written with such concise simplicity, in his masterful writings. he stands among the great philosophers and spiritual teachers of all time and he is one of the rare masters who can articulate with such peaceful, easy clarity.25 years ago, i was introduced to his philosophy and writing with a gift of “the miracle of mindfulness” and have resonated and grown continually with his teachings of living in the “present” ever since… once you read it and get it, you will never forget and never be the same… you can not erase it…it is with you forever…and, of course, washing dishes will never be the same.he is truly inspiring by articulating how to be “present” with such ease and understanding… his writing is for all; the academic, the layman, the advanced psychological professional, the veteran, the novice, etc. there is no one that can not relate to and benefit from his teachings and exercises, if you will, on being mindful and present (yes, redundant to many). my belief is there is more power in being “present”, than any other single psychological philosophy… and Thich Nhat Hanh articulates it and teaches “ease without effort” … always succinct and his writing is as magical as his concepts.i just loaned out “the miracle of mindfulness” to a friend who is either in a state of anxiety in the “future” or a state of depression in the “past” … rarely, if ever, productively at peace in the “present” … she left with it, eager and optimistic to begin the process of healing and advancing her psychology to living always in the present…in my mind, “you are here” furthers the philosophy of mindfulness and living joyfully, peacefully, and entirely fulfilled by actively living in the “present”…the enormity of self-improvement philosophers and teachers is overwhelming… choices of books are endless… but, if you want a simple, yet profound easy to read author, than you would be hard pressed to beat Thich Nhat Hanh.with deepest gratitude, Thank you, Thich Nhat Hanh and all who helped bring you and “You Are Here” to me and to others whom i will share it with…most sincerely, deke . 🙂

Creates more peace in my life each time I pick it up
Most of the concepts are explained simply but are equally profound. I reread frequently when my mind becomes cluttered. I’ve since bought a few more of his books. This is my fav so far. I find starting the day with a short chapter makes my day more peaceful and challenges easier to overcome.

    Read the book
This is an excellent text that challenges you to consider. It is general in presentation so that one can apply the principals to many specific examples, only limited by our imagination. The overall theme is the emphasis on Mindfulness. This is a deep concept and would not do justice to try to summarize it in a short review. One can capture an insight into its importance in daily life by focusing on the point below your navel as you breath in and out. Do not let the outside world or thoughts enter, just let you mind relax and experience the deep breathing. It helps to relax you…this is useful in daily life or in competitive sports. “You are Here” also opens up interesting questions that cosmologists are interested in as well…where did we come from, where are we as humans going? It is not a lecture to convince anyone to adopt Buddhist thought, but stimulates the mind in a very unique way. And Mr. Hanh offers some very useful concepts from Zen-Buddhism on principals to live bye….excellent no matter what religious beliefs one has. I like Mr. Hahn’s works in general and this is one of his best

    Wonderful book
This is a very easy to read book. I first listened to this book on audio and decided to buy the paperback because I kept hearing lines that I wanted to remember and highlight. Wonderful book that helps learn mindfulness and meditation practices. I will definitely be reading this for a third time or maybe more!
