Excellent for retro gaming, and is a great all-rounder.
I used this controller to play Super Mario World, and can say it feels just like an official SNES controller, with massive quality of life controllers that make it my go-to for gaming of all generations. It’s an excellent, highly reliable and well built controller. It’s worth investing in a great controller. Great for both Raspberry Pi and PC and Switch, all at the same time. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better retro game pad than this one. I would recommend the one without grips if your hands are smaller, but this one is very comfortable for long play sessions. 8BitDo’s controller has useful features, such as Turbo, button remapping, gyro, switchable modes, profiles, and macros. Highly recommend, and is worth it for retro gaming over something like a PS4/PS5 controller, or even Nintendo’s own offerings. Very closely matches the layout of a Super Nintendo controller, and as a result feels very similar to that official controller.

    Great for Modern or Retro
I already owned a black 8BitDo Pro 2, and it’s been great. Was wanting a 2nd for 2-player situations. Then saw that a version with magnetic drift-resistant analog sticks was released, and grabbed one. It’s a good blend of modern controller capabilities and retro styling. And the easily accessible replaceable battery pack lasts for days, AND can be swapped out for 2 standard AA cell batteries in a pinch (which is a feature that is lacking in the newer Pro 3 iteration with internal battery).I have it paired with my PC in X mode, Steam Deck in D mode, iPhone in A mode, and the wife’s Switch in S mode. I can switch between all 4 devices by holding Start to power off, toggling the mode switch, and powering on.Good range, too. And while I personally am not sensitive enough to input lag to notice much of it when connected wirelessly, it also connects via USB C as a wired controller, and I suspect this would mitigate any input lag for particularly sensitive games or players.Nice controller, versatile, and fun.

    Accurate motion detection and feel.
I have been using this to play Zelda BOTW and TOTK. It was great controls and accuracy for the motion detection. Battery lasts several game hours and the joysticks feel good with accurate range. Buttons have good feeling and it has all the necessary features you would need for a standard gamepad. It feels solidly built and you can’t go wrong with this for the price.

    Niceeee
Pretty neat controller. Different settings on the back to change button/control layout for Xbox style, PS, Nintendo. Connectivity hasn’t been an issue either. Been using it for a long time now. Only issue is that when the remote sits inactive for around 15-20 minutes it will turn back off, which isn’t a huge deal since it also saves battery life.

    Works Great, Slight Calibration Required
Great controller! Feels comfortable in my hands, responsive, stylish, everything you’d want. If you want a dualshock shaped controller that can read natively as almost anything else, this is for you. The only reason I withhold a star is because out of the box the joysticks were giving wonky readouts, like 100% when fully to the left on the left stick, but only 82% when fully forward on the front stick unless I pressed it in, in which it’d jump to a random number between 80-100%. This was mostly fixed by downloading and running their firmware updater software, but I still only get 92-97% readout aimed forward, so I had to tune in my deadzone a bit to get it to work just right. So while it’s excellent, and 8bitdo have provided all the tools you need to get it working exactly how you want it, it requires a bit of testing and calibration to perform optimally. Hopefully the firmware will continue to improve and shore up that last few percents of error, and they’ll start arriving that way out of the box.

    The reigning champ.
This remains my all-time favorite controller, but it isn’t perfect. I started with the ALPS Pro 2, switched to an Ultimate, now I’m back to the Pro 2 with the hall effect variety. I also like their Ultimate, but this one has some SERIOUS advantages over it, which I’ll be mentioning.Pros:-The battery life. The battery easily lasts through a marathon session, and if it happens to die you can swap it out for AAs easily. It’s something you don’t see in enough controllers now- the ability to change the battery without prying open the controller. It means that even after the battery starts to deteriorate, the controller will still be usable. That’s an advantage it has over the more expensive Ultimate.-Customization:Full disclosure: the 8bitdo software is wonky as heck. It doesn’t resize properly for different size screens, and sometimes you’ll have to move the window around your screen to access buttons at the bottom of the window. This is is an ongoing issue that they need to get on, cuz it’s super annoying. That being said, it does everything it promises. Download and run the software (which is self-contained, so you don’t need to install it) and it just works. No driver installs, no fiddling, nothing. Within 60 seconds you can go from downloading the software to having finished your customizations. You can remap any button on the controller, change the vibration level, adjust dead zones for the sticks and analog triggers (WONDERFUL), and set macros. You can set and save up to 3 custom profiles to the device itself, and switch between them and the unaltered layout by pressing the button between the sticks. As a use-case example, I use my controller mainly on PC but also on the Switch. I have the paddles mapped so they perform the same action as pressing the sticks, which helps prevent soreness in games where you trigger things like sprinting or sneaking (looking at you, Skyrim…) using the stick. Additionally, I increased the dead zone on the analog triggers to prevent accidental activation because I can be a bit twitchy.-Build Quality8BitDo’s whole thing is mimicking classic controllers. This philosophy seems to extend to the build quality; this thing is as tough as the Game Boy that its buttons ape the design of.Now, onto the cons.-The battery life, again. Now I know what you’re thinking. Didn’t he say that the battery life was amazing, and listed it as a pro? Well, yes. It lasts a super long time. But here’s my issue with it: the only indication you get when the battery is low is the charging light flashes. The charging light is on the top of the controller, so it is fully facing away from you when it’s in use. There are 3 lights on the face of the controller (which are used to indicate which profile you’re using) and an additional FOUR on the bottom facing you. I wish that those were utilized to indicate a low battery. I’ve had a few instances where the controller died on me midgame because I didn’t realize it was low.-DesignNow this is a super minor thing, but 8bitdo please bring back the snes face design! The game boy one is cool and all, but I loved how the snes controller had concave buttons for x and y. In made it so easy to orient yourself without looking down at the controller.

I’ve been using this for about 2 months at the time of writing this review. Firstly, I love how this feels in my hand. The build quality feels premium. The d-pad is a joy, doesn’t feel clicky. The joysticks and buttons feel great too.I’ve played with Xbox controllers (360, One, Series X) and PS 4 controllers. With the Xbox controllers, I used to have pain on my palm after intense sessions. This one goes for hours (amazing battery life too, by the way) without any discomfort on my hands. And if you run out of battery, you can take out the included pack and swap in a couple of AA cells. Also worth mentioning that even though the layout is that of a PS4/Switch controller, you can change configuration to an Xbox controller via their software, store the config directly on the controller and switch to it with 1 button. Love that, since I’m used to Xbox controllers.I use it paired with either my NVDIA Shield TV Pro for GeForce NOW gaming, or with my Macbook, and it works smooth with both. Rumble isn’t supported by the Shield unfortunately, but that isn’t 8bitdo’s fault.Overall, a solid, well-made controller that is worth the money.
