The Foundation of Literacy.
An important read about instructions in phonics which is a lost art in literacy in 2025. However I do believe that what’s old is being made new again. This book helps to reignite the basic values that are needed in ye foundation of literacy.

Promotes other texts within this book
The author promotes another of his texts within this text, which sells for over $130. Copyright date of 2017, so 2 of 4 apps listed in Chapter 1 are no longer available. I agree with his methodology, yet find his own self-promotion to be shameless. Text is well-written and is not a difficult read. Outlines steps that will be easy to incorporate into my small group classroom. I must say that I do wish there was a more current edition of this book with an updated listing of currently available apps. In my school, we are encouraged to find ways to incorporate technology in the classroom, and the use of the apps with younger students to reinforce phonemic awareness and phonics, along with practicing blending and segmenting words in an engaging manner would be helpful. Perhaps the author could develop such an app.

A Must Have!!
This book is not only an amazing read but full of valuable resources (ideas) to take back into your classroom!!! I have been studying the SoR for a few years so many things in this book I already knew. BUT, what makes it amazing is how it extends on basic knowledge and gives next steps forward. The book is broken into parts so you don’t have to read from front to back if you don’t want to. It also has a section this is all about “where your phonics program fails”. Every part of this book gave me useful tools to use to build upon what I already know. If you know very little, you can use this book to learn to do better, then review on how to build upon what you know to do even more. I can’t recommend this book enough!!!

Great Book Study
A great book for teachers or homeschooling parents looking for ideas to support phonics instruction. I have had success with this as an intervention teacher and as an academic coach running PLC’s.

This is an easy-to-read book that presents info and research on the best ways research shows to implement a phonics program and goes over the mistakes that many well-intentioned teachers can make. This book provided a clear guideline on how to systematically present phonics instruction and provides activities and suggestions that are quick and easy for teachers to start doing right away. The book is NOT a phonics curriculum but instead provides a framework for how to best deliver your curriculum. It discusses the importance of a solid scope and sequence, different research-based ways to teach blending, the value of dictation and follow-up word awareness exercises, decodable texts, ways to teach high-frequency words that are not memorization-based, and how to bring in and read connected texts. In addition, the book covers 10 common areas of phonics instructions ‘failure’ and how to avoid them.Lots of practical suggestions that can be implemented right away: daily fluency work, phonemic awareness activities, suggested scope and sequence, blending lines, word building, word ladders, dictation exercises…Evidence-based activities and suggestions. Great for anybody on the Science of Reading journey.
