A Latino-centric movie adaptation is now streaming on Disney+!
From children’s book legend Judith Viorst comes the perennially popular tale of Alexander’s worst day. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is a story that belongs on every child’s bookshelf.
Alexander wakes up with gum in his hair and quickly realizes it’s going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. From missing out on the window seat in the car to getting in trouble at school, nothing seems to go his way. As the day unravels, Alexander’s mood gets worse, leaving him feeling cranky and convinced moving to Australia might be the only solution.
With relatable humor and timeless illustrations, this children’s book classic gently explores emotions, behavior, and the ups and downs of everyday life, making it the perfect story for teaching kids about feelings and how to handle a bad day.

    Everyone feels like Alexander sometimes
This was one of my favorites as a kid, so obviously I bought it for my kids as soon as they were old enough. Both my 6 year old and (to my surprise) 2 year old love this book. Sometimes we all need to feel a little company in our misery. And also be reminded that sometimes we can easily dig ourselves deeper into a hole with our attitude, perspective and responses to what we are confronted with. When my son comes home in a huff, I ask him if he’s having an Alexander day, why, and what we might do turn it around. It’s a classic that will never lose its relevance.

I felt it was too negative at first, but it has grown on me.
I have to say I didn’t like this book the first time through. I bought it for my 5 yr old who is going through a grumpy phase and I decided to read it to her for the first time on a day when she was having a crabby day for no particular reason other than she was just in a foul mood. And it is pretty negative throughout so it did nothing to change that. Just piled more negativity on top of her current mood. Since then I have read it again several times with her when she was not in that same state of mind and it has helped. She (and I) can see the story differently and it helps give her a different perspective on those times when she is just crabby or the day just doesn’t go her way. The lesson of “sometimes that’s just how it goes” is received/absorbed better when she’s not actually experiencing it at the moment. My 2 1/2 yr old also likes this book and I tend to read it in a sillier tone with her bc that’s just what works for her. One thing about this book that I really don’t like – it includes the word “hate”. Ugh. Sometimes I change the wording and when my daughter asks why I just tell her that I don’t really like hearing that word so I chose not to use it.

    Momma, today- I am Alexander.
That was the phrase that my 3 and a half year old used one day. He’d gotten in trouble at daycare. He had an ‘accident’ right after we got home. He broke a toy. He was cranky and awful. So, at the end of my rope, I pulled him into my lap and asked him to tell me what was wrong, and he said that phrase. He looked me in the eyes and said, ‘Momma, today- I am Alexander’. And then he started to cry.I had this book when I was a little girl, and loved it, so I of course had to have it for my son. I remembered it comforting me. I remember commiserating with poor Alexander, who was so set upon. And, my wonderful little boy finds the same comfort in Alexander as I once did. The knowledge that- sometimes, the world is not a fair place. Sometimes everything just seems to go wrong. This book gives us a wonderful starting point for a conversation. We talk about how Alexander’s choices are making things harder for himself. We talk about how some things just aren’t going Alexander’s way. We talk about things that Alexander could have done instead, to perhaps make things better, instead of worse. And, one of the most important things that we talk about is how, no matter what, I love him. Even when everything goes wrong. Even when he isn’t acting very nice. Nothing that he can do can make me love him any less, he can only make me love him more. And- tomorrow is another day. We can always go to bed, and try to have a better day, and make better choices, tomorrow.I read some of the negative reviews on this book, and they really confuse me. Are children not supposed to have bad days? Or, if they have bad days, are they not supposed to be able to talk about them? The safety of cuddling up with Momma and being able to talk about how everything is going wrong is one of the greatest gifts a child can be given. I can’t make the world a wonderful place- but I can help my son deal with it, when it isn’t. Alexander won’t bring world peace, but I know that it helped my little boy explain to me why he was acting so terrible- he was really just sad, and needed me to understand that he felt the world was unfair sometimes. So, while I can hope against hope that my son will always have good days, and that when faced with upsetting things he will act with nothing but smiles and good cheer- I realize that I am raising a person, and not a machine. Some days are like that. Even in Australia.
