@DrCarlHoffman –
This is one of the best books I have ever read.
This book is well written, understandable, and practical. I am a 70 year old retired male that still has so much to learn despite having four academic degrees. The life changing lesson that you have control over your emotional reaction but not the circumstance is so true. I wish I had applied this truth to my life when I suffered burnout when I was 52, and my career was destroyed. I was fortunate to recover, but if I had this book at the time of my burnout it would have eliminated so much unnecessary emotional pain.

Easy to understand book filled with practical applications
Olivia Telford’s book contains an excellent overview of CBT while also getting right into the practical applications. It is clearly directed to those hoping to use these techniques rather than for professionals. The book kicks off quickly by explaining in “regular person” terms what CBT is, its goals and uses. The author then makes it accessible by describing the stories we tell ourselves and how we can better control those narratives. The chapters then work through CBT exercises for those dealing with specific struggles such as depression, anxiety, addiction, etc. The exercises were good, however I would have liked even more under some chapters. And, there were a few list of tips that felt like lists I could simple google up. However, even with some that weren’t really anything new, having a book with so many solid suggestions in one place makes it a valuable read and book to keep as an ongoing reference. One final note that separates this book from other CBT books is its pairing with mindfulness. This is inspired as it goes hand in hand with CBT in that being mindful of your feelings and reactions allows to you know where you could use help and further work. There are tips for mindfulness throughout the day, evening, during transitions, etc. Overall, while some things you will have heard before, this book is a solid addition to home library and will continually be useful in improving our life narratives and outlooks.

Very nice duo – Mindfulness and understanding destructive thought patterns
I wanted to read this set of books because I want to understand better the issues that a young relative is having with extreme anxiety. I liked that there is a lot of detailed explanation to explain each of the issues, what causes them, how to support improvement of the issues. Each chapter has a nice summary to wind up the concepts I had just read about. There are separate sections for anxiety, depression and other issues so it was easy to focus on a single issue without too much extra information taking away from that particular topic. Destructive thought patterns are not easy to change, but I feel like I can be more understanding and supportive after reading this book (i.e. first half)I ended up really enjoying the second book which is on mindfulness purely for myself. It is such a simple concept, yet even though I have been reading about it and trying to practice it, it can be difficult when things are going wrong. Like with the first book (first half), there are really nice explanations of the history of mindfulness and it’s benefits along with how to practice. The summaries are great reminders to read just on their own as a review of the book.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Complex Subject Matter Skillfully Explained
There are a few things in my life that I would like to change and this book provides the tools to accomplish what I am looking for. While it’s not going to be easy, the writer makes the required path clear. I’m already seeing some things differently with clear opportunities. The bonus article on meditation is particularly helpful as I have not taken the subject seriously in the past.

*Spoilers* Olivia Telford’s books on CBT and Mindfulness are short and helpful guides to get you started on your journey towards a happier you. I have encountered both previously during my own personal therapy sessions. Although most of the chapters were helpful, I did find the particular chapter on Jealousy could be damaging to the self and relationships. In the chapter, it suggests you imagine the worst possible scenario, such as imagining walking in on a partner cheating on you and the feelings surrounding the situation. It suggests you keep imagining the possible scenario, that when if and when it would happen, it won’t seem so bad. I think this is counterintuitive to the goal. It’s as if you should imagine someone you love dying over and over again, so that when it eventually happens, it won’t feel so heartbreaking.It was also very important that Olivia reiterated seeking additional therapy solutions with a medical provider if you need further help. A self-help book can only do so much, and some tasks are meant to be addressed by medical professionals. Before reading any book, I always look for resources used, works cited, education/degrees of the author, etc. However, I did not find any of the above. Working in healthcare, especially talking about therapy topics, I feel you need reliable resources. Where was all of the information pulled from? Definitions of topics? Historical information on certain theories/practices? All that I could find was:”Disclaimer: This book is designed to provide accurate and authoritative information in regard to the subject matter covered. By its sale, neither the publisher nor the author is engaged in rendering psychological or other professional services. If expert assistance or counseling is needed, the services of a competent professional should be sought.”Olivia Telford. CBTandMindfulnessBundle (Kindle Locations 13-15). Pristine Publishing. Kindle Edition.This is my first time reading a “self-help” style book, so lack of resources makes me very wary. Otherwise, it’s an overview of what is out there and can lead to a future conversation with a healthcare professional.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Fantastic book! I initially started book marking several pages to refer back to then realised I was practically book marking every page! Will regularly refer back to this little gem and use many of the exercises to train my brain.

An excellent book or two books in one. The great thing about these books is that they give me tools and suggestions but emphasis that I have to put in the work to make the tools and suggestions work.I did enjoy the CBT part of the book mores as to me it makes more sense and is measure able, but whilst reading the book the mindfulness book and thinking about the exercises it reminded me of the awareness/attention/focus exercises I learned whilst practicing martial arts. When I started looking at the books through that lens, a little of things fell into place for me.A great book for self development and offers a number of tools and exercises that can be used. With the message that not everything will work for everyone, you can choose to try them and keep what works for you and then build from there.
