The “ring light” product name is a bit deceiving, since this is actually a light panel. Since there is no “ring,” you can’t position your camera in the center of the light. However, it’s still quite versatile in its uses due to the included stand and the standardized screw mount. The stand doubles as both a phone stand and over-monitor mount, and the light panel has a 1/4 inch screw socket, so if you choose to forgo the stand, it can be mounted to a tripod or arm as needed.Skin tones and colors look accurate even across the various color temperatures, so I’m inclined to believe the high CRI claim. The advertised “50 modes” is technically accurate, but is a bit of marketing fluff. It essentially refers to 5 color temperatures, each adjustable in 10 steps of brightness, thus 50 modes total. Sadly, there’s no color temperature indicator, so you kind of have to guess based on how warm/cold the light looks. Roughly approximating, I’m guessing the steps are 3000K, 4000K, 4500K, 5000K, and 6000K.There is an in-line control on the cable with 4 buttons: 1. power on/off, 2. change color temperature, 3. increase brightness, and 4. decrease brightness. When supplied with power, there’s a small blue led on the control area that shines, regardless of whether the light is on or not. It can be kind of an eyesore in the dark, but lets you know at a glance if it’s plugged in or not. I would have preferred a separate remote, as the in-line control can be tricky to access depending on how you route the cable, but it’s understandable given the price.Something important to note is that even though it’s a USB powered light, the manual recommends a dedicated power brick to supply 10W (5V/2A) power. Otherwise, if you use a standard USB port on your computer or laptop, the light may flicker at higher brightness, or not get bright enough at all, due to computer USB port power limitations.At $21.99 at the time of ordering, this light is a reasonably competitive value and accomplishes a lot in a small package, but has some room for design improvements.
