The goal of this Field Guide is to provide you, the US Army’s officers and advanced enlisted personnel, with a bootstrap guide that you can use to train yourself to be more creative.
Why be more creative? Because creativity is the human brain’s power to adapt to fast-changing, life-and-death environments, overcoming emergent challenges and leveraging emergent opportunities. It’s what enabled our species to thrive in the chaotic and uncertain ecosystems of evolution by natural selection. It makes us antifragile in situations where computer AI turns brittle, and it will allow you to outcompete and win in volatile, unstable domains.

    A must-read for all leaders
I wish I could give this book 6 stars. While it is targeted at military leaders, I found a tremendous amount of value in it for me as a software product manager who leads teams. I’ll be adapting the exercises to work for business leaders (many work as-is) and using this book to help develop leaders through book clubs.I love its brevity. Fletcher says exactly what is needed and no more. The exercises are brilliant and meaningful. I intend to read this book repeatedly this year as I work through the exercises.

Indispensible supplement for teaching Wonderworks in a practical setting
I use this FieldGuide (and the Fletcher treatment) to teach applied creativity to 1000 military leaders a year, with a goal of achieving a 3% improvement in performance in an organization with 1 million people and a trillion dollar annual budget, which works out conservatively to $35 billion net payoff a year. The evidence is that this is a good investment. This handbook is full of excellent ideas and insights that help me raise the bar for our leaders. It is easily adaptable to business and non-profit leader development as well.Update: May 2024 We briefed the Commanding General in charge of Army University on the results of our double blind peer reviewed research and he directed that our curriculum be distributed to all Army schools this fall (fall, 2024). Thats 25 professional schools, 7000 faculty, 200,000 students annually. The Army is not frivolous, It is slow to move, but when it DOES move it is decisive and inevitable in its outcomes. If we can get a 3% improvement in performance compounded annually by use of these methods, that has a net present value of $35B annually (on a $1T annual DoD budget (dont get me started on that). Now, imagine when you are compounding a 3% improvement at the cycle time of every leader engagement with a problem or opportunity in a large organization. very powerful nudge.am happy to collaborate with you, send an email to longke@yahoo.com

Strategic flashlight and firebrand: lighting the way, igniting a movement
Every entrepreneur, intrapreneur or person who wants to improve their strategic thinking needs to buy Angus Fletcher’s field guide. We had access to it in the rough draft and have used it at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business with MBA and executive education students. Students and executives love it!Creative Thinking is a flashlight that will enlighten your strategic decisions. It’s also a firebrand igniting a movement to combine critical thinking and AI with the most adaptive human skill, applied creativity.
