Literary Titan Gold Award Winning Book

Every Child is Unique! Whether they are big or small, short or tall, like to swim, dance, sing or bike. Perhaps they have a special need or disability, or have a different ethnic background. Maybe they wear glasses, talk differently or require a wheelchair to get around. The truth is that all children are different and their individuality should be celebrated, not shunned. And this inspiring and brightly illustrated rhyming picture book does just that.

By highlighting the ways kids are different from one another it helps children to accept themselves and others as the beautifully unique individuals that they are. It’s OK to be Different encourages kids to be kind and befriend those who are different from themselves, showing young children that they don’t have to look alike or enjoy doing the same activities to be kind to one another.

Readers will come away with the message: “You should always be kind to those who are different from you. Because to them, YOU are different too.”

As more children read this book and learn this concept, we can impact the world in a positive way while at the same time teach early literacy. This non-fiction book closes with a short survey for children about kindness and is a terrific way to help you start an age appropriate conversation about diversity.

It’s OK to be Different is a kid’s book that belongs in children’s book libraries alongside other popular children’s books like Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown because of the simplicity of the rhymes, the detailed illustrations and its uniquely powerful message about kindness and diversity.

Themes represented in this book include diversity, kindness, anti-bullying, racism, disabilities and special needs. So if you’re looking for a diverse book for kids that can start an important conversation at an early age, you’ve found it.

So, if you are looking for a good children’s learning book for kids 2-4 or 3-5, or even children 6-8 with special needs, this colourful rhyming picture book is a great choice. And don’t be surprised if it quickly becomes a favourite they ask to read again and again.

One parent left a reader review that said: “Amazing. This really helped my child become more confident. I am really happy with how this book improved how she thinks about herself.” It’s OK to be Different is all about showing children that the things that make them different are the very things that make them, them. We are all human, but we are not all the same and the things that make us different are the things that make us, unique.

It’s the perfect inclusion gift book for both boys and girls preschool through grade 3. It helps parents and educators start an age appropriate conversation about race, special needs and other ways adults and children are diverse.

NOTE: This paperback was updated June 2025. Updates from the original include front and back matter and a few revised illustrations (done previously) but no story text changes have been made,

A great book about diversity and kindness.
This is a wonderful books for children to begin learning about diversity and to foster discussions about how everyone is different, and that it ok. The book reinforces that we should always be kind to those different from us. Illustrations are wonderful and captured the attention of my 4 year old. Highly recommend.

    Beautiful message!
As a mom with a special needs child, this book brought tears to my eyes. It’s a cute and quick read to hold a little one’s attention and is direct and to the point. To be kind to everyone and remember we are all different. The illustrations are a little silly and the grammar of the word ‘nother irked me a little as a teacher, but the intended audience isn’t going to notice any of that. We bought a copy to donate to my son’s preschool classroom. Highly recommend

    Cute story, creepy illustrations
This book is very cute and inclusive! I love the written portion and the message! However, why is no one talking about the illustrations?! I personally found the people’s faces a little unsettling at times and at other times, absolutely creepy. Wish the illustrations were less intense and startling, but enjoying it despite that!!

Good reminder to always be kind
I think anyone who has kids about to go to school needs to read this book. It’s a good reminder for them that our differences are what make us beautiful and to be kind to others who don’t look, sound, or act like us.

We’re all different and IT IS OKAY!
So I bought this book for my daughter because she is special needs BUT as I was reading it to her and my son this afternoon, I realized that this book isn’t only for special needs, it’s not only for just children, this book is for EVERYONE! Y’all please go get y’all a copy! Read it to your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, whoever! It’s a really good book. We ALL are different and IT IS OKAY! When my son throws his tantrums (he’s 3) or gets upset (for example today I was dressing him and two pairs of his shorts which is his size (2t) they both were way too big, well he cried because I guess he thought “well mom is dressing me to go bye bye and now I’m not dressed she’s going to leave me” well I brought in a pair that fit him and put it on him and tell him it’s okay, he’s okay and he goes “it’s okay” we usually say that or count or say our abcs to calm us down. All I’m saying is we all are different. Baby, child, teen, adult, elderly and IT IS OKAY! Don’t be afraid to be different and stand out. Goodnight! ♥️

This book is positive and gives children an encouraging message!
This book is positive, uplifting and celebratory of each of our differences. It portrays different kinds of children playing together and states: “You should always be kind to those who are different from you.”The author and illustrator treated this topic with gentleness and respect, with an eye toward encouraging every child’s self-esteem and respect for others. Glad I bought it!

I have seen some reviews that are critical of the illustrations. I find them to be sweet and a bit nostalgic. I did not have any issues with printing or paper quality. To be perfectly honest the message is more important to me. The book is a perfect introduction to observing and acknowledging differences between us all, whether that be our colour of skin or mode of transportation (walking, wheelchair, crutches etc) and my 2.5 year old twins love it. A great way to get the conversation rolling to be followed up with something a bit more substantial as they grow.

I love it.
