An exceptional guide
I work with a group of low-income teenagers at a neighborhood development center. The group all have a reasonable grasp of BASIC and a smattering of C, and have expressed an interest in learning an additional language. JAVA was suggested, so I got this book(among others) to review.I was pleasantly surprised to discover how complete this beginner’s book is. The author starts with the history of JAVA and his theory of why it has passed the test of time and how it continues to be a highly utilized language. Then she goes directly into setting up a workstation for coding, including how to install the JDK or JAVA development kit and suggests several options, including an open-source for the JDK download that was especially welcome. She also explains the IDE, an option to use with the JDK and explains how it would benefit and ease certain aspects while working with the code. By chapter three, you are familiar with JAVA standards and ready to begin coding. As you begin learning the basics of JAVA, the information is presented well, in detailed chapters with step-by-step instructions, including structure to variables, methods, objects and classes to working with arrays. Occasionally, the author offers a series of questions about the important points she had covered to ensure you are comfortable with that aspect before moving on to the next step. As a final bonus she includes an excellent glossary of terms that is a great help. All in all, it’s a very good offering, with two of the group wanting to continue to learn more about the language. We reviewed several JAVA guides, and this one was the best overall and the most user friendly. It is an excellent guide for someone who is comfortable with the basics of computer language and looking to add another form of income to their portfolio.

Clear, Confidence-Building Start to Java Programming
Java for Beginners delivers exactly what a newcomer needs: a structured, approachable path into one of the most widely used programming languages in the world. The explanations are clear, the examples are practical, and the hands-on exercises are genuinely engaging. What I appreciate the most is the balance between theory and application. Many beginner coding books either drown you in jargon or skip foundational concepts entirely. This one walks you through Java fundamentals step-by-step, covering variables, data types, control flow, and error handling, while also introducing real-world projects that make the concepts stick.

Coding Made Simple
I had zero coding experience, and honestly, the idea of learning Java felt intimidating, but this book made it surprisingly doable! The lessons are clear and bite-sized, so I never felt overwhelmed. I loved how each chapter had hands-on exercises, as putting the concepts into practice really helped. One of the projects even inspired me to create a small program on my own, which gave me such a confidence boost. It’s perfect for someone like me, balancing a full-time job while exploring a potential career change. This book broke everything down in a way that felt approachable and manageable. If you’re new to coding and want a realistic way to start, this is a fantastic guide. I’m excited to keep learning!

Great book to learn Java
This book was very well written with easy to follow steps guiding you through Java programming with examples of different ways to use the programming and quizzes at the end of each chapter testing knowledge that you gain through each chapter. I like how the author placed information in small bits, helping you to learn quicker and more thoroughly as information was provided in very easy to understand paragraphs rather than trying to put it into one big page that would be hard to follow.

A great course
If you’re just starting out or need a refresher, this book explains the building blocks of strong coding. I’m retired now but I miss coding so much. I coded in Visual Basic, SQL, .net, Powerbuilder, and others, but never JAVA. This seems like a great language to start with.

I have read several books about Java but this stands out by far as taking you through clear, step by step instructions to get to grip with the programming language. I am a beginner and haven’t grown up coding like a lot of younger people but this book is perfect whether you have a basic knowledge of coding or are just starting out for the first time. Ive actually made some projects with this book I am rather proud of! Recommend!

This book got me coding Java from a novice status. I like the step by step approach and the clear, and constructive language. Easy to follow steps with reminder questions at the end of each section really help consolidate the learnings. This is a real challenger for the …”for dummies” series.
