Beautiful and Fascinating — But a Bit Advanced for Younger Science Fans
Our 5-year-old son is absolutely fascinated by science, so we got him the DK Knowledge Encyclopedia: Science! (2nd Edition) — and it’s been both a hit and a bit of a challenge. He loves flipping through the pages with us, pointing out pictures, and asking a million questions. The visuals are amazing — bright, detailed, and packed with things to explore — but it’s definitely on the nerdier, more advanced side.Every page is dense with facts and diagrams, and the topics change from page to page, so it takes some effort to explain everything in a way that makes sense to a young child. We usually read it together, and he enjoys that time even if he doesn’t fully grasp it all yet. It’s still a great book to spark curiosity and grow with him over time — more of a long-term companion than a quick bedtime read. For now, though, we find the DK Dinosaur book a bit easier for him to understand and engage with on his own.Overall, we’d recommend it for curious kids, especially if parents are ready to read along and simplify some of the concepts. It’s a beautiful and inspiring book — just be prepared for some deep science conversations!

A beautiful book that kids can use for a long time
I absolutely love the Smithsonian books for kids! This book is even more beautiful in person as the cover is now a vibrant green/blue. I leave this out on the table for my five year old and he often goes to it to explore the pages and ask questions. I now have 3 of these books for my son and will be buying more. The visuals are amazing and it is so great for kids of all ages to learn. This will last throughout many years of my son’s childhood. The book is very sturdy and well made.

The Graphic images are amazing
This was a Christmas gift, but I was very close to returning it. I decided to let the recipient of the gift decide. After flipping through the pages and seeing all the detailed graphic images, he fell in love with the book. It really is very well designed. The images and graphic diagrams share so many interesting cool facts and fun details about science.
