Get ready to get inspired

In short and engaging entries, this deceptively simple volume presents examples of creative thinkers from the worlds of writing, music, architecture, painting, technology, and more, shedding light on their process, and showing how each of us can learn from them to improve our lives and our work.
Subjects range from the grueling practice schedule of the Beatles and the relentless revisions of Tolkien, Sondheim, and Picasso to the surprisingly slapdash creation of The Simpsons. You’ll learn about the most successful class in history (in which every student won a Nobel Prize), how frozen peas were invented, why J.K. Rowling likes to write in cafes, and how 95 percent of Apocalypse Now ended up on the cutting-room floor. Takeaways include:
– Doubt everything all the time.
– Plan to have more accidents.
– Be mature enough to be childish.
– Contradict yourself more often.
– Be practically useless.
– If it ain’t broke, break it.
– Surprise yourself.
– Look forward to disappointment.
– Be as incompetent as possible.

    Quick inspiration, good value
Enjoyed the tight writing and stories of creative minds, Tesla, Jobs, Picasso and on and on. A thought-provoking and short read (3-4 hrs for me), kudos to the author for his great work!”Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” — Victor Hugo.

Worth ten times the cost. Best book ever on creativity.
An inspired collection of inspiring approaches to creativity and problem solving. I’ve read many books on creativity in my 70+ years, and this is by far the best. Ignore the naysayers. If you have problems in creativity to solve, look no further. This book is a bargain. I’ve read it twice and loved it twice. There is no theory of creativity here, just stimulating ideas and stories. This is a book for the working creative, not the armchair observer. A very few of the multitudinous gems in this book:”Create a diagram of your thought processes.” Comment: This sounds really hard; that’s why it’s worth doing. Do it and redo it until you get something good out of it.”Feel inadequate.” A chapter title.”To be true to an idea, you have to value expression over perfection, vitality over finish, movement over the static, expression over perfection [sic], and form over function.” Comment: The writing isn’t always brilliant, as you can see, but even here the advice is worth a try.”…instead of getting them to come up with an idea, I get them to come up with a hundred.” Comment: Once you’ve got an idea, get another and another and another, as a technique. Then work on just one of them. And so on. If the above don’t appeal to you, how about these?”Cut up this page with scissors.””Don’t automatically discard accidents, but instead work with them.””One person who is willing to be excessive can achieve more in an hour than fifty reasonable people can achieve in a year.”Okay, enough. If you aren’t sold yet, move along, move along.

    Create what you love
inspiring, thoughtful and well written. I like the fact that you can just go to any page on the book and not start from page 1. It has inspired me and given me that push, to better myself

    Terrific!!!
Easy to read and filled with great stories. But it is the author’s insights that are the real home runs. I was constantly writing down quotes to remember.

A lot of suggestions for how to become more creative, including some unusual ones.
In The Art of Creative Thinking Rod Judkins lists 89 ways to see things differently. Judkins is an artist and lecturer and in this short work demonstrates how art can help you see the world in various ways. His points have been made by others, but not in this unique way. Each point consists of a short passage and includes one or more people who illustrate the point. Some of his points are positive and more like common sense. These include: Be positive about negatives; don’t let the views of others distract you; be inspired by nature; stay hungry and accept rejection. On the other hand, some points are of a contrary nature. These include: pause for thoughtlessness; plan to have more accidents; feel inadequate; to achieve something, do nothing; be as annoying as possible; look forward to disappointment; and aspire to having no goals (because goals hamper creativity). As a teacher I can relate to his final suggestion: to learn, teach. There are a lot of good suggestions in this rather short book, but after a while reading them becomes a bit tedious. One approach might be to focus on one or two of the ideas that have a particular meaning for you and see what results you get.

This book is OK, with some interesting anecdotes and snippets of information and insights, although some of which are just common sense. Although, arguably, it appears slightly overpriced for what it is, hopefully however it may inspire the reader.
