NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A guide to the art of journaling—and a meditation on the central questions of life—by the bestselling author of Between Two Kingdoms, with contributions from Hanif Abdurraqib, Jon Batiste, Salman Rushdie, Gloria Steinem, George Saunders, and many more
“The Book of Alchemy proves on every page that a creative response can be found in every moment of life—regardless of what is happening in the world.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat Pray Love
AN NPR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR
From the time she was young, Suleika Jaouad has kept a journal. She’s used it to mark life’s biggest occasions and to weather its most ferocious storms. Journaling has buoyed her through illness, heartbreak, and the deepest uncertainty. And she is not alone: for so many people, keeping a journal is an essential tool for navigating both the personal peaks and valleys and the collective challenges of modern life. More than ever, we need a space for puzzling through.
In The Book of Alchemy, Suleika explores the art of journaling and shares everything she’s learned about how this life-altering practice can help us tap into that mystical trait that exists in every human: creativity. She has gathered wisdom from one hundred writers, artists, and thinkers in the form of essays and writing prompts. Their insights invite us to inhabit a more inspired life.
A companion through challenging times, The Book of Alchemy is broken into themes ranging from new beginnings to love, loss, and rebuilding. Whether you’re a lifelong journaler or new to the practice, this book gives you the tools, direction, and encouragement to engage with discomfort, ask questions, peel back the layers, dream daringly, uncover your truest self—and in doing so, to learn to hold the unbearably brutal and astonishingly beautiful facts of life in the same palm.
Also includes essays from: Martha Beck • Nadia Bolz-Weber • Alain de Botton • Susan Cheever • Lena Dunham • Melissa Febos • Liana Finck • John Green • Marie Howe • Pico Iyer • Oliver Jeffers • Quintin Jones • Michael Koryta • Hanif Kureishi • Kiese Laymon • Cleyvis Natera • Ann Patchett • Esther Perel • Adrienne Raphel • Jenny Rosenstrach • Sarah Ruhl • Sharon Salzberg • Dani Shapiro • Mavis Staples • Linda Sue Park • Nafissa Thompson-Spires • Jia Tolentino • Lindy West • Lidia Yuknavitch • And many others

    An OUTSTANDING Collection!
This is an Ooutstanding collection of essays that is both inspiring and thought provoking! The key to this collection, and the journaling prompts found throughout the book, is to journal your OWN story. So many of the prompts come from people who were struggling or at a crossroads , and yet they come out on the other side by looking at things through an amazingly new creative lens! The Bookof Alchemy will magically transform the way you think about things into a creative process of moving through life. The magic comes from your own metacognitive process, not through someone else’s essay or prompt. There is no magical cure except to do the work, reflect on the way you look at things, and creatively step outside of your own comfortable box. This is an outstanding book with immensely powerful prompts to creatively inspire you to coach yourself through life using your own creative practices! I’ve bought this book for everyone I love!

    Inspiring, wise and generous
Suleika has curated a collection of writing from some of the best creative minds and turned each narrative into a writing prompt that reaches deep into the heart and imagination. Her words, her story, both generous and wise, are inspiring. Thank you, Suleika.

Highly recommended to all who write (or any other creative endeavor)
A beautiful book by a beautiful soul! Suleika, the writer, organizes the book into several chapters related to aspects of the writing life and the work of writing. Within each chapter are short essays by others who write, all together forming a personal and illuminating book, not just on writing but on life. I can’t recommend this book highly enough–especially if you’ve also read Between Two Kingdoms (her first book) and/or seen American Symphony. It’s not a how-to book, but an inspiration and an excellent collection of prompts to go with the short essays.

Journaling with each chapter and loving it.
I’m still savoring this book; taking my time reading as I journal. Love the author and her story of healing through journaling. The book has me journaling regularly, which is the point. It’s inspiring and the voices of each author gives all kinds of ways to imagine life and or journaling. The regular journaling has also awakened some doodling and interest in making art-which is a slightly uncomfortable but very curious space for me.

A book full of interesting stories to lubricate your journaling gears
I’m enjoying this take on journaling throughly. I’ve been journaling for over 30 years and always enjoy motivating stores and this book doesn’t disappoint. After each story by various writers is a journal entry suggestion. (I hesitate to call them prompts as I’ve never enjoyed journaling prompts.) I must confess I’ve yet to write a journal entry based on these stories although I plan to. Rather, I’m enjoying all the stories themselves. They are packed with rich mental pictures and metaphors that are a joy to read. Here’s just one example:”Over the years, there have been many times when I’ve been struck still by the grandeur of nature, be it looking into the gaping maw of the Grand Canyon, beholding the sheer force of Niagara Falls, or experiencing the oceanic vastness of the Sahara. It’s the sublime: I am made small in the most wonderful way. But now I can also experience that dizzying thrill when I stop and study the magenta-hued pom-pom, or the complex constellations in a sprig of Queen Anne’s lace. I am more awake and alive. Less world-weary, more filled with wonder.” —The Book of Alchemy p.93The format of the book reminds me of the Whack Pack app (“A Whack on the Side of the Head”) I often use to get my creative juices going. There’s a story to read and then a few questions afterward to get the mental oil flowing. That’s what this book is about.Highly recommended.Note: I purchased the book myself. This is not a paid review.

Suleika has always been an icon of inspiration to me as well as her husband, Jon, who I watched on Colbert’s late night show for years until he left to be with Suleika when her cancer reappeared. My prayers have always been with her as her words supported my wife and I while we sat with my friend, Rob, and his partner, Janna, over 5 years as he fought his battle until he succumbed a few days before Christmas 2024. Her latest book with its mischevious title embody her strength, wisdom, courage and wit as she lives with a life threatening condition that she has emerged from in the past and will again. Sincerest thanks to her and her marvelous life partner, Jon Batiste, letting us be with them through their ordeals and travails with eternal wishes for her full recovery and a healthy long life together. You are both cherished.

A wonderful book if you want to start journalling or simply get back into writing. The introduction is so warm and personal, it really welcomes the reader in. The essays are pretty short and each of the prompts are so different that they never get tiresome.
