A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
Harvard professor and bestselling author Arthur C. Brooks offers science-based insights on work and life in this curated collection from his “How to Build a Life” column in The Atlantic.
Imagine if your life were a startup. How would you lead it and shape it to be most successful?
That’s the question behind The Happiness Files, a rich selection of enlightening and instructive essays by Arthur C. Brooks, known worldwide for his inspiring yet practical wisdom and advice in his weekly column for The Atlantic and in his bestselling books, From Strength to Strength and Build the Life You Want (coauthored with Oprah Winfrey).
The simple answer, as Brooks wisely explains, is to manage your life in a way that leads to truly valuable rewards: love, enjoyment, satisfaction, and meaning—in other words, happiness.
Building on his popular Harvard Business School course “Leadership and Happiness,” Brooks begins each essay with sharp observations and behavioral science research that shed light on how happiness really works, then offers experiential wisdom and practical advice. Beautifully written, the essays range from ancient philosophy to literature, pop culture, and the contemporary world of work. They explore topics and challenges such as “Procrastinate This, Not That,” “Why Success Can Feel So Bitter,” and “Five Pillars of a Good Life.” Readers will find the chapters helpfully grouped by theme: “On Managing Yourself,” “On Jobs, Money, and Building Your Career,” “On Balancing Work, Life, and Relationships,” and more.
We all need more happiness in our work and in our lives. In The Happiness Files you’ll find enlightenment, inspiration, and useful guidance for leading a happier, more successful, and more fulfilling life and career.

Personable & Informative – Recommended Read
This artfully curated collection of essays could not have come at a better time in my life. Dr. Brooks’ approach through a scientific lens, complemented by charming personal anecdotes, makes for an engaging and informative read. It gets at some of the pressing questions around work, how we look at success, and the ways we organize our lives without seeming overly prescriptive or detached from how real people live. A worthwhile read.

Great collection of pragmatic essays
Great collection of short, easy to read articles filled with sage wisdom from Author Brooks. I really love this book – especially when I don’t want to get into a big read. Great collection! Highly recommend!

Interesting and readable
This was a book of collected essays on what the author has learned about happiness. They were interesting but I can’t say I learned anything earth-shattering. Still, it was an easy read–I’d read one or two essays each day.

A fantastic new book from Arthur Brooks
Regular readers of The Atlantic have come to love and appreciate Arthur Brooks’ weekly “How to Build a Life” column. Unfortunately, we are limited in being able to share those articles with loved ones. This compilation of the best columns with a fantastic new intro is the perfect solution to revisit your favorites and share Arthur’s brilliant work far and wide. As usual, it’s a chock-full of timeless wisdom, practical insights, and science you can use in your everyday life. You won’t regret adding it to your personal library or buying a copy to give to a friend.

Happiness Book is So-So
Because this is a collection of articles written by the author over the years, the target audience for this book is mixed. For example, the first section compiles articles that are employment and student related. Later sections touch more on daily life. So there’s something for everyone in this book, but not all chapters are relatable. I did find nuggets and highlighted my Kindle of parts that I would revisit.

Excellent book. It’s a nice collection of bite-sized article — easy to read and reflect on in a short setting.

Very good book with profound insights into how happiness can be cultivated. I especially like how Arthur structures each chapter into three clear parts: (1) examples and anecdotes, (2) what the science says, and (3) concluding reflections. His weekly newsletters are pure gold. Thank you.
