How does this book differ from other books on cloud computing?

What makes the book a unicorn is its “self-taught” approach. With detailed explanations of cloud concepts and step-by-step lab elaborations, it systematically guides readers to learn cloud computing and develop essential cloud skills at their own pace.

I’ve designed this book to be both practical and case-driven. It doesn’t just introduce the basics, it provides comprehensive tutorials that guide readers through the major cloud world platforms, including AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. These tutorials are enriched with real-world industrial examples and business use cases, assisting readers to not only learn but also apply cloud technology in the real world.

Thorough illustrations and examples are included with young students and professionals in mind to help them explore the cloud world, jump-start a cloud career, and advance in no time.

What are the key takeaways from this book?

This book starts with an in-depth exploration of the AWS cloud and then moves on to Azure and GCP, highlighting their commonalities and differences. It fills a unique niche that others have missed: mastering one domain and learning other domains through comparison.

By taking a vertical approach within each platform and then a horizontal approach across platforms, readers will gain a holistic view of the cloud ecosystem. They’ll develop a solid understanding of cloud concepts encompassing AWS, Azure, and GCP, and a systematic skill set in these main cloud platforms.

How has your experience helped you write this book?

As a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in enterprise information technology and cloud computing, I bring over thirty years of professional experience to this book. I’ve worked in almost all industrial sectors and government agencies, spanning the whole IT spectrum—from server operating systems, database management systems, IP networking, data storage networking, and virtualization technologies to hybrid and multi-cloud computing.

Additionally, my role as a distinguished adjunct professor in colleges and professional education centers has enabled me to explain and illustrate complex concepts clearly and in an easy-to-follow way. I’ve written this book to integrate my professional and educational expertise, and that may be why it was well-received by the cloud learning community.

What’s your favorite part of the book?

While learning the hard skills is essential in the cloud journey, soft skills like motivation and mindset act as super-catalysts in your cloud career expedition. In chapter 17 of the book, I’ve shared my cloud journey. This part covers my jumpstart inspired by Steve Jobs’ Stanford commencement speech, my consistent pursuit of excellence in AWS, the expansion from AWS to Azure and GCP in Set Solutions, and my leadership development in Dito LLC.

I hope these experiences encourage readers to build a successful career in cloud computing.

A complete, inspiring guide for any aspiring cloud engineer.
The Self-Taught Cloud Computing Engineer by Dr. Logan Song is one of the most comprehensive and practical cloud learning resources I’ve ever used. The book takes you from foundational computing concepts all the way through advanced topics across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. What impressed me most is how clearly Dr. Song breaks down even the most complex technologies- compute, storage, networking, security, big data, and AI-into simple, actionable steps. Whether you’re a beginner or already working in tech, this book gives you both the clarity and confidence to grow. Each chapter includes real-world explanations, hands-on exercises, diagrams, and certification-style practice questions. The structured, multi-cloud approach is incredibly valuable. Instead of focusing on just one platform, Dr. Song teaches you how the major cloud providers compare, where they differ, and how to navigate all three with ease. This makes the book not just a study guide, but a true roadmap for becoming a well-rounded cloud professional. As someone who had the privilege of being Dr. Logan Song’s student at UT Dallas, I can say that this book captures his teaching style perfectly-clear, encouraging, and deeply knowledgeable. In class, he always emphasized practical understanding, hands-on learning, and building a strong foundation. Reading this book felt like being right back in his lectures. His passion for helping students succeed shines through every page, especially in the career advice and personal journey he shares in the final section.Overall, this is an exceptional resource for anyone pursuing a cloud career. It’s not just a technical manual-it’s guidance, mentorship, and inspiration wrapped into one. I highly recommend it to students, self-learners, and professionals at any stage of their cloud journey.

As a graduate student in an MS in Information Technology and Management (ITM) program, I found Dr. Logan Song’s The Self-Taught Cloud Computing Engineer to be the single most effective resource for bridging cloud theory with professional application. If you are looking to move beyond single-vendor certifications and truly understand the multi-cloud reality of the enterprise world, this book is essential.Key Strengths that Set This Book Apart:The book’s comprehensive, three-part structure is its greatest asset, offering a systematic path to expertise:Deep Dive into AWS: It starts with a strong foundation in AWS, meticulously covering core services (EC2, S3, VPC) before moving into advanced domains like Big Data (Glue, EMR), Database management, and critically, a robust exploration of security and networking. This provides a deep understanding of the market leader.GCP Services: It efficiently maps AWS concepts to their GCP equivalents (Compute Engine, Cloud Storage), highlighting Google’s unique strengths in data analytics and state-of-the-art AI services (Vertex AI).Azure Integration: The final section applies this comparative methodology to Azure, ensuring you can recognize common cloud patterns while mastering Azure’s unique features and strong enterprise integration capabilities.High Practical and Pedagogical Value:Unlike many dry study guides, this book is designed for practical skill development. Each chapter includes practice questions and focuses heavily on industrial projects, business use cases, and career development guidance. It doesn’t just teach you what the services are; it teaches you the why and how of cloud architecture and strategy, a crucial perspective for anyone moving into management or senior engineering roles.Conclusion:Dr. Song and his team have created a clear, comprehensive, and highly practical roadmap for cloud mastery. The book is full of very well designed practice exercises, but they may sound a bit cryptic if you have zero knowledge of the Cloud: it is best to learn a few fundamentals first.

This book is like a step by step instruction manual to work with AWS. I am not sure how it justifies even remotely its title. I am new to cloud engineering and I gave up after 5 pages. Plenty of environment images with steps and no effort to provide an understanding of what is cloud engineering. I don’t recommend it…
