The definitive account of the warrior-monks who stood as Christendom’s shield against centuries of relentless Islamic aggression, and a superlative example of Muscular Christianity for an era marred by effete and effeminized forms of the faith.
In this magisterial history, Raymond Ibrahim chronicles the long and brutal conflict between Islam and the West through the eyes and lives of Christendom’s original commando forces: the knights of the Temple and Hospital. These warrior monks, whose unprecedented fusion of piety and militancy remains unmatched to this day, played a pivotal—though overlooked if not suppressed—role in defending Christian civilization against the onslaught of Islamic forces during the Crusades and beyond.
Drawing on an exhaustive study of primary sources, and infused with his signature blend of rigorous scholarship and compelling storytelling, Ibrahim’s groundbreaking work far transcends the typical constraints of modern academic retellings, debunks widely held myths (such as the persistent claim that the Templars evolved into the Freemasons), and uncovers the theological foundation that gave rise to and provided justification for these military orders. In line with Christ’s now ignored directive that “two swords” are “enough” (Luke 22:38), these two brotherhoods wielded both spiritual and martial power to safeguard the faith.
WARNING: Brimming with epic battles, stunning heroism, and self-sacrificial martyrdom against the savage hordes of Islam, The Two Swords of Christ—the third installment of Ibrahim’s trilogy (following Sword and Scimitar and Defenders of the West)—stands as his fiercest and most violent narrative to date.

Because a more muscular and masculine Faith is possible
Outstanding. I found the book inspirational, and I also read Ibrhahim’s 2 previous books, “the sword and the scimitar”, and ‘defenders of the west”.In this book, first Ibrahim deals with the elephant in the room for us modern Christians. I mean, warrior monks? But the framework of the 2 swords of Christ makes a lot of sense and has been accepted over the centuries, so the theological context is extremely helpful. Then the author proceeds to narrate the story of the Templars first and then of the Hospitaller. The narration flows extremely well, it is rich in details with extensive quotes of contemporary sources. It is a great story of battles, heroes, faith, and individual acts of courage. Thank God it is not the usual boring and ideologically driven sociological bla bla bla over the crusades or medieval knigths. You can read this book as a stand alone volume, BUT it would help to read his other 2 books first because they provide a lot of context and background against which to make sense of individual campaigns or characters.”The 2 swords of Christ” seems to me to be more focused on the templars than on the Hospitaller, and I learnt a lot about them. I was slightly disappointed by the quick narration of the siege of Malta, I would have liked the author to have dedicated maybe a whole another detailed chapter to it, but it is also true that one can find other books about it (I enjoyed “The Great Siege of Malta” by Ernle Bradford) and I must confess I always enjoy reading about it, so it might be me.Anyway, highly recommended for any student of medieval history, but also to young people who are struggling to find a home in our tradition, which is extremely rich but often forgotten or played down. Only a few, and I commend Mr. Raymond Ibrahim for being one of these few, take our Western tradition seriously, read the sources on their own terms rather than through ideological lenses, and, while not forgetting to mention the ugly, they also share the good in it.

    Lots of Primary Sources !
I’ve read a lot of bad history, rarely do they find themselves using many primary sources to fill up their pages, not so here. A wonderfully done work of history, easy to consume, which engages the knights on the terms of their age, not the terms moderns have prepared for them.Worth a read if you are interested in Crusading. However, great praise and so on, but it is biased, shocking of course. Keep in mind that if it happened he’s going to give you the meat on the bones, sometimes however like with Al-Adil who freed thousands of Christian slaves, saving them from sexual and physical slavery in the Muslim world, he choses to leave the good aside with some vague words and move on. But if you wanted more reasons to hate Mohomed the Second then this book will give them to you.I must complain however that the cover to my pre-order was torn, the hard cover is intact and untouched by the paper is torn near the front side and the back tip. I am a clinger however and refuse to give up my pre-order copy since I do believe such history like this is history itself.

    Insightful, Measured, Absorbing
This book offers a clear, engaging look at a long and complicated period of history that still shapes the modern world. The author explains the motivations, beliefs, and consequences of centuries of conflict in a way that is accessible without feeling simplified or shallow.Like the previous two books in this series, the narrative is well paced and grounded in historical sources, giving readers confidence that they are learning real history rather than opinion or myth. Complex religious and military ideas are explained plainly, making the book approachable even for those new to the subject. What stands out most is the balanced tone. The book avoids sensationalism and treats all sides with seriousness and respect, allowing readers to form their own understanding of events rather than being pushed toward easy conclusions.Overall, this is a thoughtful and absorbing read for anyone interested in medieval history, religious conflict, or the deeper roots of tensions between civilizations. It informs, challenges, and stays with you after the final page.

    Super History Book
Superb read, maybe his best yet. Informative and enlightening, easy read even for people without a tremendous background on the Crusades/Middle East. You won’t regret purchasing and reading this or any of his other books. Honest as he always is. Get your boys to read it and buy them a shield and sword, but the question on the shield is Hospitaller or Templar???

A fantastic historical account of heroism against overwhelming odds and remarkable feats against an implacable foe. Raymond does a wonderful job using primary sources to remind the reader just how courageous these Knights of Christendom were and the hardships they endured, all while leaving you exhilarated and grateful for their sacrifices. If you want to feel inspired, read this book.
